JJ School of Art and Architecture now deemed an university

The 166-year-old reputed structure in the country, a well known institution for the arts, Sir J J School of Arts, Mumbai, received a deemed university title on Wednesday, 28th June. The three institutions, J J School of Arts, J J School of Architecture and J J School of Applied Arts are merging together to form a university in de-novo mode. The state cabinet recently approved the proposal presented by a committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Vijay Khole in March 2020. Now, the University Grant Commission will send its positive reply soon to the institution.

This will be the first de-novo institution in the country, which means first institution which encourages innovations in research and teaching in unique emerging fields. As the state cabinet has approved its university status, this will be an autonomous institution. Many alumni were trying hard for years to make the university autonomous. This will be beneficial to all students as there will be infrastructural development in the college and the institution can determine its own upgraded curriculum to provide class-one art education in the world.

A combined university of three institutions will have five new departments providing unique master’s programs. There will be full-time faculties at the university.

The state cabinet has approved Rs. 50.38 crore for all developmental activities on the campus of a university and the salaries of employees.

It will start functioning as a university in the next academic year 2024-25.

Some criticize this decision saying, “It is the best institution of the arts which provides quality education for low fees, but for now, the institution will have its own right to decide the fee structure, students from poor backgrounds won’t be able to take admission here.” There are no signs that the cabinet will change its decision.
