New study sheds light on bacteria responsible for food poisoning

A food-poisoning bacteria that does more good than harm to our body, is an interesting fact by itself. Surrounding the myth that bacteria itself is harmful to our body, here comes a notion that could prove this wrong.

This new study is published in the Journal, Infection and Immunity.  A species of bacteria called Providencia is generally seen in the gut system of patients suffering from gastroenteritis. This bacteria is similar in its structure to the most well-known and commonly seen bacterial species, Escherichia coli.

Food poisoning can be of various causative agents and levels ranging from benign to fatal. In some cases, it is extremely lethal, that it may cause death in a matter of seconds. It poses symptoms such as severe stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue, dehydration etc.

A group of researchers led by Prof Shinji Yamasaki has examined the species microscopically and is proven to be effective against food poisoning. Although there has to be a thorough review of this bacterial species by fellow scientists, it is seen as a breakthrough to prevent death by food poisoning.
