Komala Sohonie celebrates her 112th birthday on June 18th 2023, she is a legendary scientist in Indian Science and is a pioneer of all the novel scientific developments. She is the first Indian woman to receive a PhD degree in a scientific discipline. She had been a trailblazer to all the women scientists at times when women were not even given equal rights in society.
Cytochrome C is one of the mitochondrial proteins, it is a major activator for apoptotic cycles and is released into the cytosol. Kamala Sohonie was born in Madhya Pradesh in 1912, her parents were highly respected in the society because of their education. Her parents were chemists, which would have led her to pioneer in this path. She completed her degree at Bombay University and shined as a studious prodigy in her class.
She also became the 1st woman to get a place in the Indian Institute of Science. She faced a lot of difficulties being a woman, In IISC, but had overcome all hurdles, to become a trailblazer. Her discovery of the palm leaf-based drink “Neera” stamped a great mark in the field of Chemical Science.
