The Gujarat High Court has temporarily stopped the distribution of the film "Maharaj," which stars Junaid Khan, the son of Bollywood star Aamir Khan. The movie was supposed to be available on Netflix today, but it was postponed due to an ad-interim injunction issued by Justice Sangeetha K Vishen on June 13. The court's ruling came after Lord Krishna devotees and Pustimarg sect members submitted a petition, claiming that the video would disturb public order and encourage violence against their group and the Hindu religion.
Yashraj Films' "Maharaj" is said to be based on the contentious Libel Case of 1862, which contained offensive remarks regarding Hinduism and Lord Krishna. The petitioners accused the creators of seeking to hide the film's problematic premise by releasing it without trailers or marketing.
Justice Vishen has issued letters to Yashraj Films, Netflix India, and other respondents, asking for a response by June 18. The court granted ad-interim relief, essentially stopping the film's release until the next hearing. The petitioners stressed the film's potential global influence on OTT platforms, citing permanent harm to their religious sensibilities.
