In a remarkable show of unity and environmental commitment, over 22,000 students in Thane, Maharashtra, have joined forces in the "Ek Minute Thane Sathi" initiative, a movement that advocates dedicating one minute of each day to the betterment of the city. This initiative, which translates to "One Minute for Thane," embodies the essence of sustainability and the Swachh Bharat Mission, with a dual focus on eco-friendly Ganesh statues and cleaner urban environments.
Swachh Bharat Mission and Promoting Sustainability Among Youth
Thane has long been a front-runner in the Swachh Bharat Mission, a nationwide drive for garbage-free cities. The city's unwavering commitment to sanitation found renewed energy through the "Ek Minute Thane Sathi" initiative, which saw enthusiastic participation from its young residents. At the core of this movement lies a profound commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness among the youth. Students, numbering over 22,000, have committed to dedicating just one minute of their daily lives to actions that contribute to a greener and cleaner Thane.

One noteworthy aspect of this initiative was the crafting of eco-friendly Ganesh idols. An inter-school competition, 'Swachhata Pakhwada-Swachhata Hi Seva 2023' on 'Eco-Friendly Ganpati Idol Making' and 'Best Made out of Waste' encouraged students to embrace sustainable materials and practices. It was organised in 493 schools, and over 22,177 students participated. These young minds, with their creative prowess, aimed to revolutionize Ganesh's idol immersion by using eco-friendly materials.
Raising Awareness for Sustainability
The students' efforts extended beyond artistry; they also focused on spreading awareness about sustainability. Through their creations, they conveyed powerful messages about the importance of eco-conscious celebrations and responsible idol immersion.
Initiatives by the City Corporation
Mangrove Cleanliness Activity: This was launched under the Indian Swachhata League 2.0. Over 2,200 people came together to pledge to protect the mangroves and keep their surroundings clean. The local sanitation workers, along with the authorities, took part in this cleanliness activity.
Red Spot Cleanliness: This drive was at the Thane Railway Station. It was aimed at sensitising people not to spit in the open and deface public property. Over 1,000 people took part in this initiative.
Parsik Hill Cleanliness: The Thane Municipal Corporation also started this initiative. This drive had a response from all age groups—school kids, young girls and boys, men and women—all joined forces, resulting in over 2,000 citizens. This was a huge success, as it beautified Parsik Hill and created awareness among the community.
Mass Pledge for a Cleaner Thane
A significant milestone was reached during a massive gathering at the Dadoji Konddev Stadium, where approximately 25,000 school students and other participants pledged to dedicate one minute daily to make Thane a cleaner and more environmentally friendly city. This collective commitment exemplifies Thane's determination to create a positive impact on its urban environment.
Community Engagement for Cleaner Environments
The "Ek Minute Thane Sathi" initiative is not just about individual pledges but emphasizes community engagement and collective responsibility for the city's cleanliness and sustainability. It transcends age, background, and beliefs, uniting people for a common cause.
Towards a Greener, Cleaner Future
While the initiative aims to beautify Thane, it also serves as a potent tool for raising awareness about the importance of sustainable practices in everyday life. It underscores the potential for significant change when communities come together.
Thane's "Ek Minute Thane Sathi" initiative stands as a testament to how collective efforts, even in small increments of time, can lead to substantial progress. It combines the spirit of the Swachh Bharat Mission with a deep commitment to creating cleaner and more sustainable urban environments. In this inspiring journey, Thane's youth are crafting a future where eco-friendly Ganesh statues and cleaner cities coexist harmoniously.
