On 28th May, Delhi police treated wrestlers viciously who were on their way to protest near the new parliament building. That disrespectful treatment received lots of criticism from the entire nation. After watching it on national television, 1983’s cricket World Cup winning squad issued a statement in support of protesting wrestlers.
Wrestlers shifted their protest to Haridwar and said that they would be immersing their medals and trophies in Ganga. A team who achieved a record breaking victory in the 83’s World Cup expressed their grief over this. They said, “Protesters must not make any quick decision. The medals which they won are not just theirs, but it’s a nation’s pride, it reflects the country’s prosperity. And the most important thing is, these medals are the result of immense hard work, consistency and efforts. Let the law handle the situation. We are hoping that case will be resolved soon.”
Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, K Srikanth, Madan Lal, Mohindar Amernath and the other remaining team showed their strong support to wrestling protestors, while current BCCI President Roger Binny distanced himself from this statement. He said, “Concerned authorities have taken the case in hand and we should not mix sports and politics.”
