A teenage girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Delhi's Swaroop Nagar area, with police arresting four accused, including three minors, after an extensive CCTV investigation traced the movement of a tempo linked to the crime. The teenager's severely decomposed body was found in an open field days after the alleged assault, with police saying stray dogs had mauled parts of the body.

The case has shocked the area not only because of the brutality of the alleged crime but also because investigators initially struggled to establish the identity of the victim due to the condition of her body.

According to police, the girl knew at least one of the accused. Investigators believe she had gone to meet him before the situation allegedly turned violent. The investigation is now focused on reconstructing the exact sequence of events, establishing the individual role of each accused and examining forensic evidence collected from the scene.

Teen Girl Found Dead in Swaroop Nagar Field

The case came to light on September 13, when police received information about a body lying in a field near Kushak Road in Swaroop Nagar, in northwest Delhi.

The body was found in a severely decomposed and mutilated condition. Parts of it had reportedly been attacked by stray dogs, while one hand was found separated from the body. The decomposition and damage were so extensive that investigators initially faced difficulty identifying the victim and even determining her identity through the physical remains alone.

The condition of the body also indicated that it had remained exposed in the open for some time. Police and forensic teams subsequently examined the remains, while efforts were launched to identify the deceased and determine how she had died.

A medical examination subsequently indicated sexual assault and multiple injuries. Investigators said the girl had suffered several stab wounds and that the evidence pointed to murder following the alleged sexual assault.

What Police Say Happened Before the Murder

Investigators believe the victim knew one of the juvenile suspects, who was reportedly around 17 years old. Police said she had gone to meet him before the alleged assault.

According to the investigation so far, the teenager was allegedly sexually assaulted by the first suspect. Police have said that she threatened to report the incident, after which he allegedly called his friends.

The other suspects are accused of subsequently joining him and sexually assaulting the girl. Investigators have also said that the group had been drinking alcohol.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and murder are still being investigated. Police are examining whether the sexual assault took place inside the tempo used by the accused, at the field, or at more than one location.

After the alleged assault, the group reportedly took the girl towards an open field. Police allege that she was stabbed repeatedly and that the accused attempted to conceal her body using leaves and mud before leaving the area in a tempo.

Investigators have recovered two knives that are suspected to have been used in the crime, along with clothing allegedly worn by the accused. These items have been sent for examination as part of the forensic investigation.

More Than 50 CCTV Cameras Scanned

With the victim's identity initially unclear and no immediate eyewitnesses available, CCTV footage became a crucial part of the investigation.

Delhi Police reportedly examined footage from more than 50 cameras installed along roads and routes around the suspected crime scene. During this exercise, investigators noticed a tempo moving through the area around the relevant period.

However, the vehicle's registration number could not initially be read clearly because of darkness and poor visibility.

Instead of relying on a single camera, investigators followed the vehicle's movement across multiple locations. By piecing together the available footage, police were able to narrow down the vehicle and eventually trace it to Khadda Colony in Swaroop Nagar.

The investigation then took another turn when police detained and questioned the tempo's driver.

During questioning, investigators reportedly learned that the vehicle was frequently being used by one of the juveniles connected to the case. Further examination of CCTV footage showed four young men inside the tempo around the relevant period.

The suspects were subsequently identified, but police found that they had left their homes. Teams were then deployed to trace them.

Four Accused, Including Three Minors

Police have apprehended four people in connection with the case. One is an adult identified as Shivam alias Sudama, while the other three are juveniles aged 16 and 17, according to police reports.

The fact that three of the accused are minors has added another dimension to the investigation. Their individual roles will have to be established through statements, forensic evidence, CCTV footage and other material collected by investigators.

Police are also examining whether anyone else was involved in the crime.

Investigators have said that statements made during questioning are being independently verified rather than being treated as conclusive evidence. Forensic examination is expected to play an important role in determining what happened and establishing the precise involvement of each suspect.

Why the Victim Was Not Reported Missing

Another significant detail to emerge from the investigation concerns the absence of an initial missing-person complaint.

Police said the girl's family had not reported her missing because they were unaware that she had been away from home for several days. Relatives reportedly told investigators that she would sometimes leave home and return after a few days.

Some reports said the teenager had been living separately from her parents in the area and was looking for work. This reportedly contributed to the delay in the family realising that she was missing.

As a result, when the body was initially discovered, police had to undertake additional efforts to establish who the victim was before her family could be located and the investigation could move forward on the basis of her identity.

The circumstances have also raised questions about the vulnerability of young people living away from their families and the difficulty of quickly detecting when someone has gone missing.

Police Investigation Continues

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The investigation remains underway.

Police are examining CCTV footage, forensic evidence, the recovered knives and clothing, the tempo and statements of the accused and other witnesses. Investigators are also trying to establish the exact timeline between the alleged assault, the killing and the dumping of the body.

One of the key questions is the precise location of the alleged sexual assault and the sequence in which the suspects allegedly attacked the victim. Investigators are also looking into whether the accused acted together throughout the incident or whether their individual roles differed.

The police have not ruled out the possibility of additional involvement and are continuing to examine the available evidence.

For now, the CCTV trail remains one of the most significant breakthroughs in the case. What initially appeared to be a crime with few immediate leads was gradually pieced together through surveillance footage, vehicle tracing and interrogation.

The case has also highlighted how crucial CCTV networks can become in investigations where conventional eyewitness evidence is unavailable. More than 50 cameras, individually offering only fragments of information, collectively helped investigators track a suspicious vehicle and move closer to the people allegedly connected to the crime.

As the forensic examination and legal proceedings continue, investigators will now have to establish the full chain of events and ensure that allegations against each accused are supported by admissible evidence.

The teenage girl's death has left a deeply disturbing case for investigators to unravel, while the next stages of the probe will determine how the alleged crime unfolded, what role each accused played and whether anyone else was involved.
