The situation at Nandurbar Civil Hospital in Maharashtra is indeed alarming, with a significant number of child deaths in the past three months. The Chief Medical Officer, M. Sawan Kumar, has identified several factors contributing to these tragic deaths, including low birth weight, birth asphyxia, sepsis, respiratory ailments, and the presence of sickle cell disease among women in the region. Additionally, untimely medical attention, which can result from incomplete medical measures, mass migration, and home deliveries, has been cited as a significant contributor to the problem.
Month | Number of Child Deaths |
---|---|
July | 75 |
August | 86 |
September (up to present) | 18 |
Recognizing the pressing need to address these challenges and save young lives, authorities in Nandurbar have launched a mission called "Lakshya 84 Days." This mission aims to tackle the root causes of child mortality, improve healthcare services, and provide timely interventions to enhance the chances of infant survival.
The mission is structured to allocate 42 days to Antenatal Care (ANC) and 42 days to Postnatal Care (PNC). By focusing on these critical periods before and after childbirth, the goal is to ensure comprehensive healthcare for expectant mothers and newborns. Regular visits to ANC and PNC units, check-ups, and targeted efforts are part of the strategy to reduce the number of child deaths. The authorities are working diligently on this mission with the hope that visible improvements will occur within two to three months.
