Pedestrian First: BMC Set to Reclaim 320 km of Footpaths Across Mumbai

Pedestrians in Mumbai may soon get their walking spaces back as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launches its ambitious 'Pedestrian First' campaign. Footpaths across the financial capital have long been obstructed by unauthorized hawkers, illegally parked vehicles, construction debris, and encroachments, forcing pedestrians onto busy roads and endangering lives.

Key Highlights of the Campaign:

• First Phase Target: The civic body aims to reclaim and clear 320 kilometers of footpaths across Mumbai in the initial phase.

• Priority Zones: High-footfall areas surrounding railway stations, metro stations, crowded markets, schools, and hospitals will be prioritized for clearing operations.

• Major Corridors Targeted: Key arterial stretches, including SV Road in the western suburbs, are being targeted for rigorous anti-encroachment enforcement.

• Core Objective: Restoring footpaths to their original, dedicated purpose—providing safe, accessible, and unhindered walkways for pedestrians.
