Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Creates History, Smashes Fastest-Ever List A Fifty in Just 11 Balls

Indian cricket’s newest sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has added another extraordinary chapter to his rapidly growing legacy. The 15-year-old batting prodigy shattered a long-standing world record by scoring the fastest half-century in List A cricket history, reaching the milestone in just 11 balls during the Tri-Nation Series final between India A and Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.

The breathtaking innings not only helped India A secure the title but also further cemented Sooryavanshi’s reputation as one of the most exciting young talents the sport has seen in recent years.

Historic 11-Ball Fifty Breaks Two-Decade-Old Record

Opening the batting for India A, Sooryavanshi launched a relentless assault on the Sri Lankan bowling attack from the very first delivery. The left-handed batter raced to his maiden India A half-century in just 11 balls, setting a new world record for the fastest fifty in List A cricket.

In doing so, he surpassed the previous mark held by Sri Lanka’s Kaushalya Weeraratne, whose 12-ball half-century had stood for more than two decades. Several reports also noted that former Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera’s 13-ball fifty was among the quickest efforts previously recorded in the format.

The feat is even more remarkable considering that the fastest half-centuries in One-Day Internationals remain the joint 16-ball efforts of AB de Villiers and Matthew Forde. Sooryavanshi’s 11-ball blitz therefore eclipsed even the quickest ODI fifties ever recorded.

A Knock for the Ages

The teenager eventually fell just six runs short of a century, but his final score of 94 from only 29 deliveries was enough to leave fans, experts, and former players in awe.

His sensational innings featured:

  • 94 runs off 29 balls

  • 10 fours

  • 8 sixes

  • Strike rate of 324.14

The strike rate itself was astonishing, although reports pointed out that it was still not the highest strike rate achieved by Sooryavanshi in his young career, underlining the extraordinary standards he has already set for himself.

The innings began with a boundary off the very first ball he faced from Mohamed Shiraz. From there, the youngster shifted through the gears almost instantly. One of the defining moments came when he smashed 26 runs in a single over from Shiraz, striking three sixes and two fours.

By the time he reached his historic fifty, he had already hammered five fours and five sixes, leaving the Sri Lankan bowlers scrambling for answers.

India A Dominate the Final

Asked to bat first, India A produced a massive total of 377/9, with Sooryavanshi’s fireworks laying the foundation.

At one stage, India A appeared on course to cross the 400-run mark thanks to the opener’s devastating powerplay assault. When Sooryavanshi was dismissed for 94, India A had already surged to 132 runs in just nine overs.

After his departure, captain Tilak Varma played a crucial stabilizing role with a composed 67 off 90 balls. Valuable late contributions from Anukul Roy, who scored 39 off 15 balls, and Vipraj Nigam, who added 27 off 20 deliveries, ensured India A maintained momentum and posted an imposing total.

The mammoth score ultimately proved too much for Sri Lanka A, with India A going on to secure the Tri-Nation Series title by 66 runs.

Redemption After a Quiet League Stage

The final represented a dramatic turnaround for Sooryavanshi.

The young batter had endured a relatively modest league phase by his own lofty standards. In one of the earlier matches against Sri Lanka A, he managed only 21 runs after getting another promising start but failing to convert it into a substantial score.

However, when the stakes were highest, he delivered one of the most destructive innings in List A cricket history.

His performance was widely viewed as a statement response after a heated earlier encounter between the two teams during the league stage, when on-field exchanges and sledging had added tension to the rivalry. Rather than engaging verbally, Sooryavanshi answered emphatically with his bat in the final.

Another Milestone in a Meteoric Rise

Sooryavanshi’s latest achievement is merely the newest entry in an already astonishing résumé.

The teenager first grabbed global attention through age-group cricket before becoming a phenomenon in franchise cricket. He previously scored a remarkable 175 in an Under-19 World Cup final and has repeatedly shattered batting records despite being only 15 years old.

His exploits in the Indian Premier League further elevated his profile. Last season, he became the youngest player to score a century in men’s T20 cricket. He also registered a blistering 35-ball IPL hundred, one of the fastest centuries in tournament history.

This year, he continued that trend with another explosive 36-ball IPL century. He also produced several match-defining innings, including scores of 97 and 96 in high-pressure playoff matches and a 93-run knock that kept Rajasthan Royals’ playoff hopes alive.

Such performances have established him as one of the most feared young batters in world cricket.

Missing Out on a Century, but Making History

Despite falling agonizingly short of a hundred, Sooryavanshi’s innings was significant for more than just the world record.

The 94-run effort brought him close to another landmark. Had he remained at the crease a little longer, he could have challenged the record for the fastest List A century, currently held by Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Instead, he was dismissed attempting yet another attacking stroke, staying true to the fearless approach that has become his trademark.

Even without the century, the innings instantly entered cricket folklore.

Growing Calls for International Recognition

The record-breaking display has intensified discussions about Sooryavanshi’s future with the senior Indian team.

Although he was not included in India’s upcoming ODI plans, selectors have already named him in the T20 squad for forthcoming tours of Ireland and England, potentially setting the stage for an international debut.

The Indian cricket establishment has also taken steps to support his transition into senior cricket. Reports indicate that his parents will be allowed to accompany him on tour, reflecting a measured approach to nurturing one of the country's most prized young talents.

A Star Beyond His Years

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Sooryavanshi’s rise is not just the volume of records he continues to break, but the composure he displays while doing so.

Business leader Anand Mahindra recently highlighted the youngster’s calmness under pressure, praising his mindset and ability to remain composed in high-stakes situations despite his age.

That composure was evident once again in Dambulla. In a tournament final, against a familiar opponent, with expectations mounting around him, the teenager produced an innings that rewrote the record books.

At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already achieved feats many cricketers can only dream about. With the fastest fifty in List A history now attached to his name, Indian cricket appears to have uncovered a once-in-a-generation talent whose journey is only beginning.
