Let’s talk about your building. Not the charming period features or that slightly passive-aggressive “No Cold Callers” sign, but the actual state of the place. Because while you might be selling premium products or five-star service, if your premises look like the set of a gritty crime drama, you could be sending customers running before they’ve even opened the door. The good news? A few strategic upgrades can make your space more appealing and your sales more likely to climb out of the doldrums.
Looks Do Matter (Sorry, But They Do)
You might tell yourself that what’s inside is what counts. Very noble. But when it comes to business premises, customers absolutely will judge your book by its cover. If your paint is peeling, your signs are missing letters, or your front step is cracked like a broken biscuit, you are not giving off “professional and reliable”. You are giving off “abandoned since 2009”.
Start by sorting out the structure. If your forecourt or entrance is looking more pothole than pathway, look into commercial concrete repair. It’s not glamorous, but nobody’s buying your handmade candles or designer suits if they’ve just tripped on the way in. Smooth, solid ground makes a good first impression and avoids embarrassing personal injury claims.
Signage That Doesn’t Look Like a Cry for Help
Your signage is your handshake. It’s the first thing people see, and if it’s wonky, faded or accidentally advertising a completely different business because someone forgot to remove the old lettering, it’s not a great look. Invest in something crisp, clear and actually visible from a moving car. Bonus points if it doesn't rely on Comic Sans or neon green.
While you're at it, consider lighting. If you’re open late, don’t let your entrance lurk in the shadows like a forgotten car park. Functional, welcoming lighting gives the impression you care about safety and professionalism.
Clean Up, Clear Out, Calm Down
Customers don’t want to step over clutter, dodge spider webs or wonder what that strange smell near the stockroom is. A clean, well-maintained space puts people at ease. It shows you’re organised, hygienic and not using the back room to store leftover sandwich crusts from 2018.
Declutter regularly, keep your windows clean, and give those grimy skirting boards a once-over. It’s the business equivalent of brushing your hair before a job interview. Simple, effective, and probably overdue.
Add Some Personality, But Not in a Weird Way
A splash of colour, some plants that aren’t plastic and dying, or a chalkboard with a witty message can make your space feel more alive. You don’t need a full-blown rebrand or a foosball table in reception. Just a few small touches to show there are actual humans behind the counter.
Boost the Premises, Boost the Sales
Think of your business premises as your silent salesperson. It’s speaking to customers before you even get the chance. Make sure it’s saying the right things. Tidy up, fix the cracks, light it properly, and inject a little charm. Your sales figures just might thank you.
