NCERT removes chapters on periodic table and evolution theory from school textbooks

The decision by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to eliminate important science chapters from school textbooks has sparked widespread criticism and raised concerns among educators, experts, and researchers. Topics such as evolution, the periodic table, sources of energy, and environmental sustainability have been removed, prompting outrage. Protests had already erupted due to the removal of the evolution chapter, particularly for students aged 15-16.

However, the release of the latest textbooks has revealed additional omissions, including chapters on the periodic table and various pollution- and climate-related subjects aimed at younger learners. These exclusions have led to questions about the relevance of these topics in today's world. Critics argue that disregarding chapters related to water, air pollution, resource management, and different energy sources undermines the importance of these subjects. Experts stress the significance of comprehending evolution in biology and the essential role the periodic table plays in chemistry.

The changes have raised concerns among science education experts who believe that removing fundamental concepts may hinder students' curiosity rather than fostering it. Numerous scientists, teachers, and science communicators have signed appeals urging the restoration of the removed content on evolution. The lack of communication between NCERT, parents, and teachers to provide an explanation for these modifications has intensified the concerns. The absence of public comments from NCERT further fuels speculation regarding the underlying motivations behind these decisions.
