A resident doctor and a medical dresser were assaulted allegedly by a patient's attendant, only days after resident doctors resumed work following an 11-day nationwide protest over the suspected rape and murder of a doctor trainee in Kolkata.

The incident occurred late Saturday night when the Doctor at Hedgewar Hospital in Karkardooma was providing critical care.

Doctor alleges patient's son slapped him

The doctor allegedly said in a statement that Late Saturday night, around 1:00 am, a patient with a forehead injury was brought to the hospital. I took him to the dressing room to stitch the wound. After I completed the first stitch and was working on the second, the patient forcefully pushed me and began hurling abuses. His son, who was outside, entered the room, slapped me and they both started abusing me further.

After a Supreme Court appeal and promises from the government to address their concerns, hundreds of Delhi resident doctors returned to work on August 23.

The August 12 strike had severely disrupted non-emergency services, such as out-of-hospital diagnostics and OPD, at major central and Delhi government hospitals.

A 10-member National Task Force was also established by the highest court to develop a policy for guaranteeing the security and safety of medical professionals. The task force has two months to submit its final report and three weeks to submit its interim report.

In order to provide prompt security-related assistance, the Union health ministry approved the Marshalls' deployment in Central government hospitals on August 19.

Union health secretary Apurva Chandra said in a statement that there will be a 25% increase in security personnel in all Central Government Hospitals. Depending on specific requests from central government hospitals, the deployment of Marshalls for immediate security-related assistance would also be authorized.
