India has approved its first underwater road–rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra in Assam, a major boost for Northeast connectivity.
The twin-tube tunnel will carry both road and rail traffic and is designed for all-weather, high-speed movement.
Officials say it will cut travel time, reduce reliance on ferries, and keep transport running during floods.
Built under one of the world’s widest and most challenging rivers, the project will use advanced tunnelling technology.
Experts call it a game-changer for trade, tourism, and strategic mobility in the region.
