Maharashtra TET 2026 Postponed After Paper Leak: What Every Candidate Must Know

The Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test (MAHA TET) 2026, scheduled to be conducted on June 28 across the state, has been postponed after authorities confirmed that the examination question paper had been leaked nearly 24 hours before the test. The decision came following a police raid in Bhiwandi, Thane district, where officials recovered documents that allegedly matched the sealed examination paper, triggering a criminal investigation and forcing the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE) to defer the examination.

The development has affected lakhs of aspiring teachers who were set to appear for one of Maharashtra's most significant recruitment eligibility examinations.

How the alleged paper leak came to light

According to officials, the Bhiwandi Police acted on confidential information received during the early hours of Saturday, June 27. Acting on the tip-off, police conducted a raid at a location in Bhiwandi where several individuals were allegedly found in possession of pages from the sealed MAHA TET 2026 question paper packet.

Officials from the Maharashtra State Council of Examination were immediately called to verify the seized material. During verification, authorities reportedly confirmed that the recovered pages matched the actual question paper prepared for the June 28 examination.

Following the confirmation, a criminal case was registered at the Bhiwandi Police Station, and multiple suspects were detained for questioning. While authorities have confirmed that several people have been taken into custody, their identities have not yet been disclosed. Police are now investigating how the confidential examination paper was leaked and whether a larger network was involved in the operation.

Maharashtra government postpones MAHA TET

Soon after the paper leak was verified, the Maharashtra State Council of Examination officially announced the postponement of the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test 2026.

In its statement, the Council said the decision was taken in the interest of maintaining transparency, fairness and the integrity of the examination process. Authorities emphasised that conducting the examination after confirmation of the leak would compromise the credibility of the recruitment process.

The examination was originally scheduled for Sunday, June 28, at 1,028 examination centres across Maharashtra. Officials stated that preserving the sanctity of the examination remained their top priority, making postponement unavoidable.

New examination date to be announced later

The Maharashtra State Council of Examination has clarified that the revised examination schedule will be announced separately after the ongoing investigation progresses.

Candidates have been advised to regularly monitor the official MSCE website for all future announcements regarding:

  • The fresh examination date.

  • Issuance of new admit cards.

  • Examination guidelines.

  • Any additional instructions for candidates.

Authorities have made it clear that the postponed examination will not be held until the integrity of the recruitment process can be fully ensured.

Will candidates need fresh admit cards?

Yes. Since the examination has been postponed, candidates will have to download fresh admit cards once the new examination date is announced.

The previously issued hall tickets will not remain valid for the rescheduled examination. The Council will release updated admit cards through its official portal before the revised examination.

Will the exam pattern change?

As of now, the Maharashtra State Council of Examination has not announced any change to the examination pattern, syllabus or marking scheme.

Only the examination date has been postponed because of the paper leak investigation. Candidates are therefore expected to prepare according to the existing examination pattern unless the Council issues a separate notification in the future.

What about application fees and refunds?

Many candidates have expressed concerns over examination fees and travel expenses after the sudden postponement.

At present, the authorities have not announced any refund policy. Instead, the Council has indicated that detailed instructions regarding refunds, if applicable, and other candidate-related issues will be issued along with future notifications after the revised examination schedule is finalised.

Until then, candidates are advised to wait for the official communication instead of relying on unofficial reports.

Investigation gathers pace

Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine how the confidential examination paper reached unauthorized individuals before the examination.

Investigators are examining:

  • The source of the leak.

  • Whether insiders were involved.

  • The distribution network used to circulate the paper.

  • The possibility of additional accused being linked to the case.

A criminal case has already been registered, and the probe remains ongoing. Officials have indicated that further arrests may follow depending on the findings of the investigation.

Official statement expected from Education Department

Officials indicated that the Maharashtra Education Department is expected to issue a detailed press note explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement is likely to include additional information regarding the investigation, administrative action, and the roadmap for conducting the examination at a later date. The revised examination calendar will also be announced through official channels once authorities are satisfied that adequate safeguards have been put in place.

Another setback for examination security

The latest incident has once again raised concerns over the security of competitive examinations in the country. Reports indicate that the Maharashtra State Council of Examination had already implemented enhanced security arrangements while conducting MAHA TET 2026, particularly in light of recent examination irregularities reported elsewhere. Despite those measures, the alleged leak surfaced just a day before the examination, forcing authorities to postpone the test at the last moment.

What candidates should do now

Candidates are not required to submit fresh applications at this stage. Instead, they should:

  • Wait for the official announcement of the revised examination date.

  • Download a fresh admit card when it becomes available.

  • Continue preparing according to the existing syllabus and examination pattern.

  • Follow updates only through the official MSCE website and authorised government notifications.

With the investigation underway, authorities have reiterated their commitment to conducting a fair, transparent and credible Teacher Eligibility Test. While the postponement has disrupted the plans of lakhs of aspirants, officials maintain that safeguarding the integrity of the examination is essential before the recruitment process can move forward.
