A heart-wrenching tragedy occurred in Biharpurwa village, Ajaygarh block of Panna district, Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.
Five labourers, Ashish Yadav, Rajkumar Yadav, Rampal Yadav, Chunnu Yadav, and Chunvad Pal, lost their lives when the soil unexpectedly collapsed on them while they were digging a public irrigation well.
Tragically, four of the deceased belonged to the same family, leaving the village in a state of deep shock and mourning.
The incident has sparked public outrage, with villagers alleging a significant delay in the arrival of administrative rescue teams.
It is reported that residents had to arrange for a JCB machine themselves to begin the excavation, but by the time help arrived, it was too late to save the workers.
Panna District Collector Usha Parmar reached the spot to oversee the recovery of the bodies and initiate a formal investigation.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has expressed his condolences and announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the kin of each deceased.
This incident has raised critical questions regarding the safety protocols and geotechnical oversight for rural public works projects.
