Telangana is grappling with relentless downpours as the southwest monsoon continues to batter the state, causing widespread flooding and disrupting daily life. On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall had inundated multiple districts, including Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Medak, and Jangaon. The ongoing monsoon activity has resulted in submerged roads, traffic snarls, and urgent flood warnings across Telangana.
Record Rainfall Across Telangana Districts
According to the IMD, Thursday saw extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations, particularly in Karimnagar. Medak and Jangaon experienced very heavy rains, while other districts such as Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Siddipet, Hanumakonda, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Nagarkurnool, Kamareddy, and Nizamabad also recorded significant rainfall.
Some of the highest rainfall measurements included:
-
Yacharam, Rangareddy: 17.9 cm
-
Medak headquarters: 17.8 cm

East Hyderabad, particularly Hayathnagar, faced severe flooding after 90 minutes of intense rain, submerging roads and residential areas. The Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway between Vanasthalipuram and Pedda Amberpet was inundated, creating massive traffic congestion. Several school buses were stranded, and colonies in Abdullapurmet mandal reported waterlogging.
In Medak district, continuous rainfall from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. led to waterlogging on major roads including Ramdas Chowrasta, Mahatma Gandhi Road, and Auto Nagar, while houses in Gandhinagar colony were inundated.
Government Response and Safety Measures
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to remain on high alert, ensuring residents living in structurally weak houses are evacuated to safer locations. The GHMC, HMDA, SDRF, Fire, and Police departments have been instructed to coordinate relief operations, while citizens are advised to exercise caution at flooded causeways.
The IMD has forecast continued heavy rainfall across several districts:
-
Friday: Asifabad, Mancherial, Suryapet, Mahabubabad
-
Saturday: Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad
Residents of Hyderabad are also advised to plan travel cautiously, as heavy rains are expected to persist into Friday night, September 12.

Flooded Roads and Traffic Disruptions
The rising water levels of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs have caused the Musi River to overflow, prompting authorities to close Moosarambagh Bridge and divert traffic via Golnaka Bridge. A 100-foot road in Bahadurpura West has been submerged and is closed to vehicles.
Traffic from Purana Pul to Jiyaguda Kamela Road has been rerouted through Karwan, Ziaguda, and Gopi Hotel. Weather enthusiast T. Balaji predicts isolated rains throughout the day in Hyderabad, with scattered intense showers expected at night.

Flood Warnings for Twin Reservoirs
Authorities have issued flood warnings for Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar due to heavy inflows. The Hyderabad Metro Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has opened the reservoir gates to release water into the Musi River.
As of 9 a.m. on Friday:
-
Osman Sagar: Water level at 1,789.50 ft (full level 1,790 ft), inflow 2,300 cusecs, outflow 2,028 cusecs through six gates.
-
Himayat Sagar: Water level at 1,762.20 ft (full level 1,763.50 ft), inflow 5,500 cusecs, outflow 5,215 cusecs through three gates.
Following the gate openings, Cyberabad traffic police closed service road Exit 17, diverting traffic from Shamshabad to Gachibowli via Kismatpur, Bandlaguda, and TGPA Junction. Return traffic has been diverted through Lords College, Kismatpur, Budwel, and Aramghar. Authorities have requested commuters to adhere strictly to these diversions.
Ongoing Flood Challenges
Heavy rains have caused rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds to overflow, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting traffic. In Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, the Bhuvanagiri-Chityala road has been closed as floodwaters breach a low-level bridge at Nagireddypally.
The IMD continues to forecast heavy rainfall for Telangana on Friday and Saturday. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed the entire administration to remain on high alert. Evacuation orders have been issued for residents in vulnerable houses, and coordinated rescue operations are being conducted by HYDRAA, GHMC, SDRF, Fire, Traffic, and Police departments.
The Irrigation Department is closely monitoring flood inflows at reservoirs, causeways, and culverts to mitigate risks in rivulets and streams across the state.
This detailed coverage underscores the serious impact of the ongoing monsoon in Telangana, highlighting affected areas, rainfall statistics, government actions, and safety advisories. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow official instructions to ensure safety.
