Uttar Pradesh: Truck Rams Into Kanwariyas in Ayodhya, One Devotee Killed, Another Injured

Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh: A tragic road accident during the ongoing Kanwar Yatra in Uttar Pradesh claimed the life of one pilgrim and left another critically injured after a truck crashed into a group of Kanwariyas near the Saryu River bridge in Ayodhya on Sunday.

The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Gulhariya police station, where devotees were making their pilgrimage after collecting holy water from the Saryu River. Authorities confirmed that Akash Yadav (28), a resident of Gorakhpur, died in the accident, while another Kanwariya sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.

Ayodhya accident, Kanwariya accident

Victim Identified as Gorakhpur Resident

According to police, Akash Yadav had travelled from Gorakhpur to Ayodhya to participate in the annual Kanwar Yatra, a religious pilgrimage observed by devotees of Lord Shiva. After collecting sacred water from the Saryu River, he and other pilgrims were proceeding along the route when a truck reportedly rammed into their group near the bridge.

The impact proved fatal for Akash Yadav, while another devotee suffered critical injuries. Emergency responders and local police rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the accident.

Hospital Confirms Death

Doctors at Shri Ram Hospital in Ayodhya confirmed the casualty.

Dr. Rahul Yadav, Emergency Medical Officer at the hospital, said that the 28-year-old pilgrim had been brought to the facility after being run over by the truck near the Saryu River. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. The second injured pilgrim continues to receive treatment, with doctors monitoring his condition closely.

Police Launch Investigation

Police have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances that led to the collision. Officials are examining whether overspeeding, negligence, or any other factor contributed to the accident.

Authorities are also gathering eyewitness accounts and inspecting the vehicle involved. Further legal action is expected based on the findings of the investigation.

Pilgrimage Season Brings Heavy Traffic

The accident comes during one of the busiest phases of the annual Kanwar Yatra, when lakhs of devotees travel across northern India carrying holy water from sacred rivers to offer at Shiva temples. The influx of pilgrims leads to increased vehicular movement and heightened traffic management efforts across Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states.

To ensure the safety of devotees, authorities typically implement traffic diversions, regulate the movement of heavy vehicles, and deploy additional police personnel along pilgrimage routes. Despite these measures, accidents involving pilgrims continue to raise concerns over road safety during the yatra season.

Road Safety Concerns During Kanwar Yatra

The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the challenges of managing heavy traffic alongside large groups of pilgrims on highways and major roads. With thousands of Kanwariyas travelling on foot during the pilgrimage, experts have repeatedly stressed the need for stricter enforcement of traffic restrictions, better segregation of pedestrian routes, and enhanced monitoring of heavy vehicles.

The Kanwar Yatra witnesses millions of devotees every year, making coordinated traffic management and public safety measures crucial for preventing such incidents.

As investigations continue, local authorities are expected to review the sequence of events leading to Sunday's accident and determine accountability.

The death of Akash Yadav has cast a shadow over the spiritual journey for fellow devotees, serving as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety during one of India's largest annual religious pilgrimages.
