Several users questioned whether Indian Railways permits religious ceremonies onboard, while others expressed concerns about safety, security, and the possible misuse of railway property.

The incident gained even more attention because it followed closely on the heels of another viral controversy involving a first-class train compartment decorated as a "honeymoon suite." Together, the two incidents have intensified public discussion over the use of premium railway coaches for private events.

Northern Railway's Clarification

As speculation mounted, Northern Railway responded through its official X account, clarifying that the video was being widely misunderstood.

The railway zone stated that the puja was conducted inside a special saloon coach booked exclusively by a private party and not inside a coach carrying regular passengers. Officials explained that the coach had been commercially reserved through IRCTC after the party made an advance payment of ₹3,08,580.

According to the clarification, the booking was made on July 8, while the saloon coach was attached to Train No. 12926 Paschim Express for a one-way journey from New Delhi (NDLS) to Mumbai (BDTS) on July 10. Northern Railway added that permission for the commercial run had been granted subject to operational feasibility.

What Is a Railway Saloon Coach?

Much of the confusion stemmed from the fact that many social media users mistook the luxury saloon coach for a regular passenger compartment.

A saloon coach is a premium railway carriage traditionally designed for senior railway officials, VIPs, and other special-purpose travel. Unlike ordinary passenger coaches, these units are equipped with amenities such as air-conditioned bedrooms, a living and dining area, attached washrooms, and a kitchenette, offering a far more private travel experience.
