A video showing a religious ceremony being conducted inside a moving Indian Railways coach has triggered widespread debate on social media, with many questioning whether such activities are permitted on trains. The clip, which surfaced days after the controversial "honeymoon coach" incident, quickly gained traction online and prompted Northern Railway to issue an official clarification.
According to the Railways, the ceremony did not take place inside a regular passenger coach but inside a privately booked luxury saloon coach that had been commercially hired through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Officials also stressed that passenger safety and train operations were not compromised during the journey.
What the Viral Video Shows
The now-viral footage captures a priest seated on the floor of a train coach performing a puja, while several devotees—many dressed in white—participate in the religious rituals. Ceremonial items, including silver plates and offerings, are visible inside the coach as the train continues its journey.
Since the rituals appeared to be taking place inside a moving train, the video sparked immediate reactions online. Several users questioned whether Indian Railways permits religious ceremonies onboard, while others expressed concerns about safety, security, and the possible misuse of railway property.
The incident gained even more attention because it followed closely on the heels of another viral controversy involving a first-class train compartment decorated as a "honeymoon suite." Together, the two incidents have intensified public discussion over the use of premium railway coaches for private events.
Northern Railway's Clarification
As speculation mounted, Northern Railway responded through its official X account, clarifying that the video was being widely misunderstood.
The railway zone stated that the puja was conducted inside a special saloon coach booked exclusively by a private party and not inside a coach carrying regular passengers. Officials explained that the coach had been commercially reserved through IRCTC after the party made an advance payment of ₹3,08,580.
According to the clarification, the booking was made on July 8, while the saloon coach was attached to Train No. 12926 Paschim Express for a one-way journey from New Delhi (NDLS) to Mumbai (BDTS) on July 10. Northern Railway added that permission for the commercial run had been granted subject to operational feasibility.
What Is a Railway Saloon Coach?
Much of the confusion stemmed from the fact that many social media users mistook the luxury saloon coach for a regular passenger compartment.
A saloon coach is a premium railway carriage traditionally designed for senior railway officials, VIPs, and other special-purpose travel. Unlike ordinary passenger coaches, these units are equipped with amenities such as air-conditioned bedrooms, a living and dining area, attached washrooms, and a kitchenette, offering a far more private travel experience.
Indian Railways also allows such coaches to be commercially booked under specified conditions through IRCTC, subject to operational approvals and payment of the applicable charges. In this case, the private party had booked the coach through the prescribed commercial process, officials said.
Railways Says Safety Was Never Compromised
Responding to criticism, Northern Railway maintained that its core responsibilities remained unchanged despite the private booking.
The railway administration reiterated that ensuring punctuality, passenger convenience, security, and operational safety continues to be its highest priority. Officials further stated that no injuries were reported during the journey and that the priest seen performing the ritual was doing so inside the privately booked saloon coach.
The clarification was intended to dispel concerns that the ceremony had disrupted railway operations or inconvenienced other passengers travelling on the train.
Social Media Remains Divided
Although the clarification answered questions about the legality of the booking, it did little to end the online debate.
Many users acknowledged that the event took place in a privately reserved coach and appreciated the Railways' prompt explanation. Others, however, argued that the issue extended beyond whether the booking followed official procedures.
Some questioned whether paying over ₹3 lakh should permit activities that might raise safety concerns, particularly those involving ceremonial items inside a moving train. Others wondered where authorities should draw the line regarding private use of railway property.
Several social media users also raised concerns over potential fire hazards associated with religious rituals, while others questioned whether similar permissions would be granted for different types of private events. Some argued that the discussion should focus not only on the religious aspect but also on broader issues such as passenger safety, security protocols, and operational consistency.
Why the Incident Has Attracted So Much Attention
The controversy reflects the growing influence of social media in shaping public perception of railway operations.
Short video clips often circulate without context, leading to assumptions before official clarifications emerge. In this case, many viewers initially believed the ceremony had taken place inside a standard passenger coach, prompting criticism directed at Indian Railways.
Northern Railway's response clarified that the coach had been privately hired through an approved commercial process, changing the narrative from an alleged misuse of public transport to a discussion about the permissible use of privately booked railway assets.
The incident has also highlighted how few people are aware that Indian Railways offers commercially bookable saloon coaches, a facility generally associated with senior officials but available under specific booking provisions.
A Broader Conversation About Private Railway Bookings
The viral video has opened up a wider conversation about the future use of premium railway coaches.
While the Railways has confirmed that the booking complied with commercial procedures, the episode has prompted discussions over whether additional guidelines are needed regarding activities conducted inside privately reserved coaches.
Some believe clearer public communication about permissible activities could help avoid future misunderstandings. Others argue that existing rules may need to be revisited to address safety concerns while balancing the rights of customers who legally reserve premium railway facilities.
For now, however, Northern Railway has maintained that all operational norms were followed in this case, the booking was legitimate, and there was no compromise on passenger safety or railway functioning.
As the video continues to circulate online, the incident serves as another reminder of how quickly viral content can spark nationwide debate—and how official clarifications often become essential in separating perception from fact.
