Moving house is both exciting a stressful at the same time. On the one hand, you’ve got the opportunity to experience everything a different base can give you, from new things to do and fresh scenery to meeting new people. On the other hand, getting all of your stuff from one property to another, and dealing with the mountain of documents and general expenses, can make the process very stressful.
While you’ve likely got the basics covered, there’s so much going on that it can be easy to forget things. In this article, you’ll be reminded of 10 elements you should try to keep firmly in your mind as you embark on the move!
1. Sort Your Utilities Out
One thing that could slip your mind is notifying the utility companies. Amidst the general chaos, it’s easy to forget that you need to make sure your gas, water, electric, and internet suppliers know that you’ll need their services in a different house; many people forget all about it, only to arrive at their new home after a long day of moving and not have any hot water.
Don’t allow this to be you, and let them each know well in advance!
2. Prioritize Declutting
Even if you’re many months out, it’s a good idea to start the decluttering process as early as you can. Before you can clean and pack, you need to sort through the large amount of stuff you won’t want to take with you, and this can take much longer than you think.
The best way to do it is to take four empty cardboard boxes into each room, and start sorting the items in there into stuff you want to keep, sell, donate, or put in the trash. You may need to do this several times depending on the room (it takes a while, but it’ll allow you to see the wood for the trees, so to speak).
3. Don’t Forget About Storage
When you move, you may find that you have too much to take to the new place – even after you’ve completed a thorough decluttering.
The solution is to approach a fleet container company to keep your belongings safe until you figure out exactly what you want to do with them, whether that be making space or finding a buyer. If this is on the cards, it’s key to secure a container early – you don’t want to be booking last minute in case the service you want isn’t available on short notice.
4. Label Your Boxes
Moving house can feel like a big rush, especially if you’re not doing your best to plan ahead (which hopefully this list will help you with!).
When that’s the case, it can be tempting to just box your stuff up as quickly as possible without a care for labeling, but this is a big mistake. For the relatively little effort it takes to mark your boxes by room, you’ll save a huge amount of time once you get to the other house, so don’t skip it.
5. Make Sure to Keep Your Valuables Separate
It can be easy for your most valuable items to get lost, particularly if they’re small, so it’s key to remember to pack them carefully if you end up in a rush.
Rather than packing these sorts of items in with the general boxes for a given room, give them their own dedicated boxes. You may even want to invest in more sturdy packaging depending on what you’re moving.

6. Consider Pets and Children
When you’re already stressed and with a lot to do, pets and small children are likely to add to that stress, so it’s a good idea to organize their movements beforehand.
You could hire a babysitter or ask a friend to look after your kids during moving day, or take the pets to a kennel for the time being. That way, they’re out of your hair for a little bit.
7. Dismantle Furniture Ahead of Time
It’s essential to be mindful of the biggest items and their dimensions and maneuverability ahead of time.
When it comes to tables, chairs, and other furniture that’s been previously assembled, it can be a good idea to get these dismantled and packed away somewhere else to give you some extra space to sort everything else out.
8. Take Pictures of Your Electronics Hubs
If you consider your main electronics hubs, such as those around your TV, for example, you’ll likely find that they comprise many different wires, each going in separate directions. It’s something that’s been gradually added to over the months and years, and if you were to take all of those wires out of each of their respective systems, you’d likely have a major job remembering where they all went.
For this reason, take pictures of each element so that when you get to your new home and begin to set everything up, you have a guide.
9. Book Your Professional Movers Early
Booking your professional movers is, naturally, one of the most important steps of this whole process – and you don’t want to leave it until the last minute.
As soon as you’ve decided on a moving date, call them to book in. If you’re moving during peak times, this is especially important, as spaces fill up quickly.
10. The Final Check
And last but not least, there’s the final check. Many people end up rushing this step because they want to get going, but give yourself the time to slowly and carefully check that each room is completely clear.
Use this time as a breather considering you’ve got a big task ahead of you in regards to unpacking at the new place.
Wrapping Up
You should now be a little clearer on some of the most important elements to prioritize during your move. It’ll be hard work, but having things organized beforehand will save you many, many hours. Good luck, and enjoy your new home!
