President Vladimir Putin has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Russia next year, as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with the Russian leader at the Kremlin. This invitation comes as Jaishankar is on a five-day official visit to Russia, where he also met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. Jaishankar expressed confidence that Modi and Putin will meet for an annual summit next year, highlighting the frequent contact between the two leaders. The summit between the Indian Prime Minister and the Russian President is the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in the strategic partnership between the two countries.
During their meeting, Putin emphasised the growing trade turnover between Russia and India, particularly in the areas of crude oil and high technology. He noted that trade turnover has been steadily increasing for the past two years, with this year's growth rate even higher than the previous year. This highlights the strong economic cooperation between the two nations.
In addition to the meeting with Putin, Jaishankar also held a productive meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, focusing on bilateral economic cooperation. They witnessed the signing of important agreements related to the construction of future power-generating units at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu.
Overall, the visit of Jaishankar to Russia and the invitation extended by Putin to Modi demonstrate the strong and growing relationship between India and Russia. The frequent high-level contacts and the focus on economic cooperation highlight the importance of the strategic partnership between the two countries. The upcoming annual summit between Modi and Putin will further strengthen this partnership and provide an opportunity for both leaders to discuss key issues and further develop their ties.
