India have successfully retained the top position in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings following the latest annual update, reaffirming their dominance in the 50-over format. However, while the Men in Blue continue to lead the standings, their advantage over second-placed New Zealand has narrowed significantly, making the battle for the summit more competitive heading into the next cycle.
According to the ICC’s annual rankings update, India’s rating dropped marginally from 119 to 118 points. At the same time, New Zealand gained two rating points to reach 113, reducing the gap between the two sides from eight points to just five. Despite the reduced cushion, India remain firmly in first place in the global ODI standings.
The annual update reflects a recalibration of rankings based on a revised weighting system. Under the ICC methodology, matches played since May 2025 carry full value, while results from the preceding two years are weighted at 50 percent. The process ensures that recent performances have a greater influence on team rankings while still acknowledging longer-term consistency.
India Stay Ahead Despite Rating Dip
India’s continued hold on the No. 1 position underlines their sustained excellence in ODI cricket over recent years. Although they lost a rating point during the update, their overall body of work has been strong enough to keep them ahead of the chasing pack. The five-point lead over New Zealand means India remain the benchmark side in the format, even as competitors close in.
The latest rankings also highlight the consistency of India’s white-ball setup. The team’s position at the top of the ODI standings comes after another strong cycle of performances and follows their continued success across ICC competitions in recent seasons.
New Zealand Strengthen Their Challenge
The biggest story behind India’s retained top ranking is arguably the rise of New Zealand. The Black Caps improved from 111 to 113 rating points, strengthening their hold on second place and significantly reducing India’s lead. Their improvement reflects a series of strong ODI performances that have helped them emerge as India’s closest challengers in the format.
With only five rating points now separating the two teams, New Zealand are well positioned to mount a serious challenge for the No. 1 ranking if they continue their upward trajectory in upcoming bilateral series and ICC events.
Australia Hold Third Position
Reigning ODI World Cup champions Australia retained third place in the rankings with an unchanged rating of 109 points. The Australians neither gained nor lost ground during the annual update, maintaining their status among the elite ODI nations.
Australia remain within striking distance of the top two sides and continue to be one of the strongest teams in world cricket across formats. Their stability in the rankings reflects consistent performances over the assessment period.
South Africa Overtake Pakistan in Top-10 Shake-Up
The only change within the top 10 rankings came in the battle for fourth place. South Africa climbed above Pakistan after gaining four rating points to reach 102, while Pakistan dropped four points to 98. As a result, the Proteas moved from fifth to fourth position, pushing Pakistan down to fifth.
This movement was the sole positional change among the top-ranked ODI teams, highlighting the overall stability of the upper half of the rankings table.
Positions Unchanged for Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and England
The rest of the top eight remained unchanged following the update. Sri Lanka stayed sixth despite their rating slipping from 98 to 96. Afghanistan retained seventh place with 93 points after losing two rating points, while England remained eighth and improved slightly from 88 to 89 points.
Although these teams experienced rating adjustments, none of the changes were substantial enough to alter their positions in the standings.
Bangladesh Extend Advantage Over West Indies
Further down the rankings, Bangladesh remained ninth with 84 points, while the West Indies stayed 10th on 74 points. However, the gap between the two sides widened considerably. The difference has now grown to 10 points, compared to six points before the annual update.
The widening separation indicates Bangladesh have strengthened their position in the lower half of the top 10, while the West Indies have lost further ground in the race to move up the rankings ladder.
Significant Changes Outside the Top 10
Several noteworthy shifts occurred beyond the top 10 positions.
Ireland moved ahead of Zimbabwe to claim 11th place. Ireland improved from 52 to 54 rating points, while Zimbabwe slipped from 54 to 53 points and dropped to 12th.
The United States also gained ground, climbing from 14th to 13th position. Their rating increased from 44 to 46 points, allowing them to move ahead of Scotland, which slipped from 45 to 44 points and dropped one place.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates advanced to 19th position after improving from 13 to 16 points. Canada experienced the biggest rating decline among the teams listed, falling from 16 to 10 points and slipping from 19th to 20th.
The Netherlands remained 15th but registered a notable four-point increase, moving from 40 to 44 rating points. Oman stayed 16th with a rise from 31 to 33 points, while Nepal remained 17th despite losing four points and dropping to 25. Namibia held 18th place after a one-point increase to 23.

India Continues White-Ball Dominance
The latest ODI rankings update further highlights India’s strong position in international white-ball cricket. In addition to leading the ODI standings, India also occupy the No. 1 spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings following the annual update conducted last week.
Across other formats, Australia remain the top-ranked men’s Test side and also hold the No. 1 position in both the Women’s ODI and Women’s T20I team rankings.
While India’s grip on the ODI summit remains intact, the narrowing gap with New Zealand suggests the race for the No. 1 ranking could become one of the most closely contested battles in international cricket over the coming months. For now, however, India continue to set the standard in ODI cricket, holding on to the top spot despite increasing pressure from their nearest rivals.
