The BCCI has released the revised schedule for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, which had been suspended on May 9 due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. The tournament will now resume from May 17 and be played across six venues: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad.
Playoffs Dates Confirmed, Venues Await Announcement
While the venues for the playoff matches are yet to be revealed, the dates have been locked in:
Qualifier 1: May 29
Eliminator: May 30
Qualifier 2: June 1
Final: June 3
In total, 17 matches will be played after the tournament restarts, including two double-headers, both of which will fall on Sundays.
Revised Schedule and League Match Distribution
The updated schedule includes 13 league games and four playoff fixtures. A key change involves the Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) match, which was called off midway on May 8 in Dharamsala. This fixture will now be replayed on May 24 in Jaipur, which will serve as PBKS’s temporary home base. Two days later, PBKS will face the Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 26, a match that was originally scheduled for May 11 in Dharamsala.
Tournament to Restart with RCB vs KKR Clash
The resumption match on May 17 will feature Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) taking on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru.
Double-Headers Scheduled on May 18 and 25
On May 18, the first double-header day:
1. Rajasthan Royals (RR) will face PBKS at 3:30 PM
2 .DC will go up against Gujarat Titans (GT) at 7:30 PM
On May 25, the second double-header day:
1. GT takes on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad (Day Match)
2 .Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) play KKR in Delhi (Evening Match)
The final league game will be held on May 27, where Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) host RCB in Lucknow.
Home Ground Disadvantages for PBKS, CSK, and SRH
The venue shifts mean that PBKS, CSK, and SRH will not get to play on their original home grounds. With CSK and SRH already eliminated from playoff contention, PBKS, who had 15 points from 11 games and were third in the standings before suspension, are at a disadvantage, playing their remaining home games at neutral venues.
BCCI’s Consultation Before Resumption
The BCCI stated that it undertook
“extensive consultations with government and security agencies, and with all the key stakeholders” before deciding to resume the tournament.
Clash with England vs West Indies ODI Series
The delayed IPL conclusion, now set for June 3, will overlap with the England vs West Indies ODI series, which runs from May 29 to June 3. This leads to potential player availability issues for:
1. West Indies players: Romario Shepherd (RCB), Shamar Joseph (LSG), Sherfane Rutherford (GT)
2 .England players (squad yet to be announced but likely affected): Jos Buttler (GT), Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone (RCB), Will Jacks, Reece Topley (MI)
IPL Final Just a Week Before WTC Final
The tight schedule will leave only seven days between the IPL Final and the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, set to begin on June 11 at Lord’s between Australia and South Africa. Both squads will be officially announced on Tuesday.
Players currently involved in the IPL who are likely to participate in the WTC Final include:
1. Australia: Pat Cummins, Travis Head (SRH), Mitchell Starc, Josh Inglis (PBKS), Josh Hazlewood (RCB)
2. South Africa: Tristan Stubbs (DC), Marco Jansen (PBKS), Aiden Markram (LSG), Kagiso Rabada (GT), Ryan Rickelton (MI), Kwena Mphaka (RR)
India A Tour of England Could Also Be Affected
The schedule compression could also impact the India A tour of England, set to start on May 30 with two unofficial Tests in Canterbury and Northampton. Several fringe Indian players expected to be involved in the five-Test England tour starting June 20 will be unavailable due to the IPL commitments.
Teams Face the Challenge of Reuniting Squads
One of the immediate challenges for all 10 IPL franchises is to reassemble their squads, especially bringing back overseas players and staff who had begun returning home during the suspension.
Gujarat Titans (GT) are in a strong position, with only Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee having left. The rest of the squad stayed back and continued training in Ahmedabad.
Mumbai Indians (MI) may also benefit, as their first game is on May 21, giving them four days to regroup after the tournament restarts.
