KKR’s Shocking Collapse in IPL 2026 – What Went Wrong?

Kolkata Knight Riders are clearly not ready this season. The absence of Russell has exposed the team’s weaknesses in a big way.

The idea that KKR is a well-prepared, competitive side now seems like a thing of the past. In IPL 2026, it has been one defeat after another. So far, 22 matches have been played in the tournament, with each team featuring in four to five games. Yet, out of the ten teams, one remains winless, the Kolkata Knight Riders.

The team is struggling at the bottom of the table with just one point, which came from a washed-out match against Punjab. Apart from that, KKR has failed to earn anything through performance. This raises an important question: what has gone wrong for the three-time champions, and why has their condition deteriorated so drastically?

Releasing Andre Russell

The decision to release Andre Russell has proven to be a major turning point.

Russell is widely regarded as one of the most explosive all-rounders in T20 cricket. His contribution was crucial in all three of KKR’s IPL title-winning campaigns. In 2024, when Kolkata lifted the trophy, Russell delivered outstanding performances with both bat and ball.

More importantly, Russell wasn’t just a player he effectively filled the role of three players in the team. He could bowl his full quota of four overs with control, economy, and wicket-taking ability. When the top order struggled, he would step in and stabilize the innings with powerful hitting, giving others time to recover a role now assigned to Cameron Green, who has yet to deliver.

On the other hand, when the top order performed well, Russell would come in during the death overs and add a quick 40–50 runs, boosting the total significantly.

His stats speak for themselves: 2,651 runs in 115 innings across 139 IPL matches at a strike rate of 174, along with 223 sixes and 186 fours. With the ball, he has taken 123 wickets.

When KKR released him ahead of the 2026 IPL auction, Russell emotionally retired from the league. He later joined the team as a power-hitting coach. However, coaching cannot replace the impact he used to make on the field.

Poor Form of Indian Players

A common factor among successful IPL teams is a strong and in-form Indian core. Unfortunately, KKR lacks this advantage.

The Indian players in the squad are neither in good form nor delivering impactful performances. Big names like Rinku Singh have failed to contribute consistently, apart from a brief highlight of hitting five sixes. Ramandeep Singh has been unable to finish matches, while Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy has also been underwhelming.

Impact of Captaincy

Leadership has also played a role in KKR’s struggles.

Most successful IPL teams today are led by young, aggressive captains who step up in crucial moments. In contrast, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, at 37, is known for his slower style of play. This approach does not align well with the fearless and high-intensity brand of cricket seen in the IPL today.

As a result, Rahane appears out of sync with the modern demands of the tournament.

Impact of Injuries

Injuries have further compounded KKR’s problems.

After the auction, there was a strong belief that KKR had assembled a solid bowling unit. The lineup included Harshit Rana as a bowling all-rounder, Akash Deep for swing bowling, and Matheesha Pathirana for death overs. Additionally, the team brought in a world-class T20 bowler like Mustafizur Rahman for the middle overs.

However, Mustafizur was ruled out, and the other three bowlers have also been dealing with injuries. This has severely weakened the team’s bowling attack.

Adding to the concerns, Cameron Green, who reportedly bought for ₹25 crore, has not yet justified his price tag with his performances.

KKR’s downfall in IPL 2026 is not due to a single factor but a combination of poor decisions, underperforming players, leadership issues, and injuries. Unless these problems are addressed quickly, the team’s struggles are likely to continue throughout the season.
