In the 64th match of IPL 2025, the Lucknow Super Giants defeated the Gujarat Titans by 33 runs and became the first team to beat Gujarat 2 times this season. Lucknow Super Giants who were already eliminated from the race of playoffs have managed to spoil Gujarat’s party as they have spoiled Gujarat’s plans of finishing in the top 2 as now Gujarat Titans have to depend on other teams results to ensure a top 2 finish their fate is not in their hands anymore thanks to an brilliant performance by Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants. Gujarat Titans won the toss and asked LSG to bat first on a flat Ahmedabad wicket, and the LSG batter pulled off a magnificent performance as they smashed their 2nd highest score of this season. LSG scored 235-2 in their 20 overs, whereas Gujarat managed to score 202-9 in their innings and ended up losing their 4th match of this season. Gujarat is still in 1st position at the points table, whereas LSG are now 6th.
The Mitchell Marsh Show
Ahmedabad and an Australian opener scoring a century, the story we’ve all heard before was once again repeated at Ahmedabad as LSG’s Australian opener Mitchell Marsh smashed the GT bowler all over the park and scored a humongous score of 117 off just 64 balls, which took LSG to their 2nd biggest score this season. The M and M opening partnership has been one of the biggest positives for LSG this season as Marsh and Markram gave their team a strong start once again, and the openers had a partnership of 91 off 59 balls. The biggest partnership of the match was of Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, who finally managed to get his form back after some bad games as the West Indies player scored a brilliant 56 off just 27 balls and provided the finishing touches to LSG’s batting. Rishabh Pant also managed to smash 2 sixes in the final overs of the innings after having his worst season as a batter in the IPL.
GT top order fails, but middle order shows glimpses of what they can do
Gujarat Titans were chasing a big total of 235, and for the second time this season, none of their top three batter were able to bat till the end as all three players, Sai, Shubman, and Jos Buttler, were sent back to the pavilion before the first half of the innings. William O'Rourke, Avesh Khan, and Akash Singh managed to do what no team has been able to they got everyone to witness the GT middle order play. Everyone was waiting for GT’s middle order to get exposed the GT middle order had some other plans as Sherfane Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan played some good shots in the middle overs and they managed to keep GT in the game for till 17 overs before William ORourke got both Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia’s wicket after which even Shahrukh’s half century was not able to get GT over the finishing line. GT lost the match because in a big chase, a team needs one of the top three to play till the end, and for the first time, it didn’t go their way this season. GT’s middle order also has firepower, and they can be relied upon in the playoffs if GT’s top order fails.
Gujarat Titans now need to win their match against Chennai Super Kings if they want to finish in top 2 and they would have to hope that either RCB or PBKS lose one of their upcoming matches only then they will get a top 2 finish because they can maximum reach to 20 points whereas RCB and PBKS can reach 21.
