An all-Premier League, Europa League final is set to take place today at the San Mames stadium in Bilbao, Spain. Manchester United and Tottenham will battle it out for the Europa League in an all-English final as both Premier League teams will be looking to save their highly disappointing season. Manchester United are currently 16th in the league, whereas Tottenham are 17th. Both teams have performed below expectations this season, but now will be looking to end the season with silverware.
Manchester United is looking for 2nd Europa title
The Red Devils from Manchester performed like their glory days are back in the semifinals of the Europa League as they dismantled Athletic by 7-1 on aggregate and made their way to the finals in style. Manchester United won the first leg by 3-0 and broke Athletic’s winning streak at home. When the Spanish team reached Old Trafford, the Red Devils unleashed their powers and won 4-1 after being one goal down at halftime. The Reds scored 4 goals in the second half and ensured their place in the Europa Final. Mason Mount had his best 30 minutes in a United shirt as the attacking midfielder scored 2 incredible goals, one from the middle of the ground. Another player who had one more glorious European night was Casemiro, who scored the 2nd goal for United, which ensured that Man United would be going into the finals. Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has taken the team to a European final in his first season. When asked if this is the new beginning for Man United, Amorim said that
“A new future, for me it is not the case but it is going to help us to finish the season, if people will look at our team in a different way because winning a European title is really important. But, again, it’s not going to change our season. The players know, everyone knows, the fans know, the staff know but winning a European title can help us have that feeling to build the future.”
And when asked why he is not under more pressure, the United boss responded by saying
”I don’t know. I know that, in this kind of club, also in Tottenham, but especially in Manchester United, it’s strange to have some coaches here they lose some games and they are sacked. It’s hard to explain. I think people are seeing what I’m trying to do. Sometimes I’m thinking more of the club than myself, so people understand, especially the board. We have lots of possibilities in this context, it’s really hard. I don’t know how to explain how the fans like me in this moment. It’s hard to explain. I will try to prove myself to the fans and to the board but I don’t have an explanation for you. Again, I think it’s a good thing for me to never worry about that. It’s part of being a coach. The most important thing is to know what you’re doing and I explained everything. Again, before, when I explained about the storm and all the problems we have to the board. So I was clear. I won’t change my idea. They know they cannot say one thing that I said to get the job and then I change my mind. It was the opposite. I think the board can understand that, the fans can understand that, but we’ll reach a moment when we have to win. No matter what. So I don’t have an explanation for that.“
Trophy drought to end for Spurs
17 years since Spurs won their last major trophy in 2008, Spurs last won the League Cup against Chelsea in 2008, and since then, they have failed to win a trophy. Now, Spurs have a chance of winning the Europa League and ending their trophy drought. Ange Postecoglou’s team defeated Bodø/Glimt 5-1 on aggregate to reach their first European Final since 2019. Spurs have defeated the Red Devils 3 times this season and will be looking to defeat them at what could be Ange’s biggest match as Spurs coach. Spurs have also suffered a lot this season and will be looking to end this season on a high and win some silverware, which would give the Spurs fans something to celebrate after so many years. Spurs captain Heung-Min Son insisted he is ready to make history by winning his first trophy at the club after admitting he was affected by nerves in the 2019 Champions League final loss to Liverpool.
"It would be very special," he said. "It would be a historic moment, I stayed here 10 years. I just want to win the trophy, which nobody has done in 10 years.Tomorrow is going to be a massive day for the club and for the boys, and for me as well. It has been such a tough season but we have always been together and that's why we are here."
Manchester United and Spurs have suffered a lot this season and will be looking to end the season with silverware and qualification to the Champions League for the next season even after finishing on the lower half of the Premier League. The fans will be hoping for a good and exciting final in Bilbao.
