Some athletes make winning look routine. Sachin Khilari did it again on Wednesday, taking gold in the men’s shot put F46 at the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, and this time two Indian teammates stood next to him on the podium.

The result

Khilari won gold with a 15.87-metre throw on his final attempt, which reports describe as a Games record. Mohd Yasser took silver, and Praveen won bronze, completing India’s second podium sweep of the Games. The first came on Day 2, in the men’s discus throw finals across the F43, F44, F62 and F64 classes.

A familiar champion

Khilari is a Paralympic medallist, with a silver from the 2024 Paris Games. He also won gold at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and has won world titles in his category. The Aichi-Nagoya gold continues that run.

More medals on the day

India added several more medals on Wednesday:

• Bhagyashri Jadhav won silver in the women’s shot put F34, her second consecutive Asian Para Games silver in the event. China’s Lijuan Zou took gold with a Games-record 9.07 metres.
• Ayush Verma won gold in the men’s shot put F53.
• In the men’s discus throw, Devender Kumar won gold with 781 Raza points, Rakesh took silver with 771, and Pardeep Kumar took bronze with 669. Raza points adjust performances across different disability classifications, so the longest throw does not always decide the final standings. Pardeep recorded the longest throw of the competition, 51.15 metres, while Devender’s best was 49.71 metres.

A note on the numbers

The Games are being held from 18 to 24 October. Reports call Khilari’s 15.87m a Games record, but his Hangzhou gold was reported with a Games record of 16.03m, so we’re asking readers and editors to check the record against the official results.
