From Stars to Protests: How Gen Z Turned Jantar Mantar into the Voice of India

The Transformation of Jantar Mantar: From Astronomy to Gen Z Protests

Delhi's Jantar Mantar was built in 1724 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II to conduct astronomical calculations, measure time, and study the positions of planets. Today, this 18th-century observatory has evolved into the nation's most prominent space for democratic expression and political protests.

The 2026 Gen Z Education Protests:

  • Between June 6 and July 25, 2026, Jantar Mantar became the epicenter of a massive youth-led movement.

  • The protests were initiated by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), an Indian youth-based political movement, alongside several student organizations.

  • Thousands of Gen Z students gathered to demand accountability and reforms following irregularities in national examinations, specifically the 2026 NEET-UG paper leak.

  • The movement gained immense traction nationwide through social media activism, digital campaigns, and the widespread use of memes.

  • The sustained pressure from the youth ultimately led to the resignation of the Union Education Minister on July 25, 2026, after which the protests were officially called off.

A place designed to measure the stars is now cementing its legacy as the sacred center of the republic where the voices of the youth echo the loudest.
