New Delhi, May 15, 2025:
The Supreme Court of India has agreed to urgently hear on May 16 the petition filed by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah, who is challenging a Madhya Pradesh High Court order that directed police to register an FIR against him for controversial remarks made against Colonel Sofia Qureshi, a senior Indian Army officer and prominent spokesperson during Operation Sindoor.
The High Court, taking suo motu cognizance of Shah’s comments at a public event in Mhow, Indore district, described his language as “scurrilous” and “dangerous,” and ordered registration of an FIR under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) including those relating to acts endangering national unity, promoting enmity on religious grounds, and outraging the modesty of a woman through speech. The court observed that Shah’s remarks, which referred to Colonel Qureshi as the “sister of terrorists,” had the propensity to incite disharmony and threaten the integrity of the nation.
Following the High Court’s directive, an FIR was registered and the matter has generated significant public and political reaction, with widespread condemnation and calls for Shah’s removal from the cabinet. Shah has since issued a public apology, stating he respects Colonel Qureshi and the armed forces, and expressed regret for his statements.
The Supreme Court will take up Shah’s plea challenging the High Court order on May 16, 2025. The case is being closely watched due to its implications for political accountability, the dignity of armed forces personnel, and the boundaries of public discourse.
