Bhopal’s Bizarre Ritual: Donkeys Enjoy a Feast of Gulab Jamuns to Invite Rain

As the monsoon weakens across parts of Madhya Pradesh, residents in Bhopal have turned to an age-old, bizarre folk ritual to appease the rain gods. Desperate for relief from the dry spell and concerned for farmers' crops, locals organized a special ceremony where donkeys were garlanded with flowers and fed sweets, specifically Gulab Jamuns.

Why Donkeys and Gulab Jamuns?

• The Folk Belief: According to local tradition and centuries-old folklore, the donkey is revered as the mount (vahana) of Goddess Shitala. Locals believe that pleasing the goddess's mount brings good fortune and compels Indra Dev, the Hindu God of Rain, to bless the region with abundant rainfall.

• The Ceremony: People gathered with placards reading "Totka to bring back the stalled monsoon." They adorned two donkeys with marigold garlands and respectfully served them platefuls of Gulab Jamuns on the streets of Bhopal, praying for agricultural prosperity.

• Science vs. Faith: While meteorologists clarify that rainfall depends strictly on atmospheric pressure and weather systems, this lighthearted yet deeply rooted traditional practice highlights how communities maintain faith during uncertain weather conditions.
