Jailer 2 Is Here: Early Reactions, Big Advance Bookings and a Question About the Second Half

For a certain kind of Rajinikanth fan, today is a festival. Jailer 2, the sequel to Nelson Dilipkumar’s 2023 hit, opened in theatres on Thursday, and the first shows have already produced the usual mix of drumbeats, whistles, and heated debate. Here is what we know so far.

What Jailer 2 is

Jailer 2 is written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, with Anirudh Ravichander returning as composer for his fifth film with the director. Rajinikanth reprises his role as “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer at the heart of the first film. Reports on the cast also mention SJ Suryah and Vidya Balan, and early social media chatter points to a cameo by Hrithik Roshan, which we have not independently confirmed.

The first Jailer, released in August 2023, was a major success. Published estimates put its worldwide earnings at somewhere between Rs 605 crore and Rs 650 crore, which makes it one of Rajinikanth’s biggest hits and explains why the sequel arrived with so much expectation.

How it did before opening day

The advance-booking numbers were strong. According to the tracker Sacnilk, opening-day bookings in India stood at about Rs 41.5 crore gross, including blocked seats. Another tally put the figure near Rs 39.8 crore and said it was the second-highest opening-day booking for a Rajinikanth film, behind the Rs 46.36 crore (with block) recorded by Coolie. One report said opening-day bookings worldwide had crossed Rs 50 crore, and that Tamil Nadu alone had passed Rs 10 crore.

Projections for opening day have run as high as about Rs 125 crore gross worldwide. That is a forecast and not a result, and actual figures will arrive over the coming days.

What early audiences are saying

Reactions after the first shows have been mixed, but they are not hostile. On social media, viewers have praised Rajinikanth’s screen presence, the action sequences and the moments built to celebrate his superstar status. Nelson’s brand of dry comedy has drawn appreciation, and Anirudh’s background score has become one of the film’s talking points. Some fans have already called it a potential blockbuster.

The complaints cluster in one place. Several viewers have questioned the second half, pointing to weaknesses in the storytelling. This is a pattern the original film’s audience will recognise, where the style carries the film even when the story is less tight. Early critic reviews are in the same range: at least one calls it a fitting sequel that is high on “aura” and full of the big hero-moment scenes the franchise is known for.

Why the star still matters

A Rajinikanth opening is as much an event as a film, and Jailer 2 shows why. Even viewers who are lukewarm on the plot tend to agree on the effect of the lead performance, and a scene designed to make an audience cheer can do a lot of work in a theatre. Whether that carries the film beyond the first weekend will depend on word of mouth, and on whether the second-half criticism spreads or fades.

What to watch

The key tests come in the next few days. Weekend collections will show whether early audience enthusiasm turns into repeat viewing. The comparison with Coolie, Rajinikanth’s other major recent release, will continue, and so will the question of how Jailer 2 stacks up against the original’s earnings.

What happens next

Expect the first official box-office numbers over the weekend, along with more detailed reviews as critics file their verdicts.
