Abhijeet Dipke Gets Conditional Bail a Day After Detention Ahead of CJP’s Tricolour March, Signs Peace Bond

Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has been granted conditional bail, a day after Delhi Police detained him as he set out for the group’s “Lehra Do Tiranga” march in Connaught Place.

A magistrate’s court granted him bail on Saturday, and he is to be released once he signs a peace bond, Delhi Police said.

From detention to court

Police detained Dipke on Friday, moments after he stepped out of his home in the Jhandewalan area to join the planned 5 pm march. On Saturday morning, he was arrested for allegedly violating a peace bond that he had furnished on October 10. Police described the action as preventive and linked it to alleged “breach of peace”.

He was then produced before a magistrate under tight security. The CJP had called the arrest illegal and demanded his immediate release.

The conditions

Dipke was let off on the assurance that he would not breach the peace for one year, reports said. “Based on the assurance given in the peace bond, he was let off. We are awaiting the written order for further details,” a senior police officer told PTI. The detailed court order, with the exact terms, was not yet available at the time of writing.

What happened at the march

Friday’s rally at Connaught Place went ahead without Dipke. Police registered multiple FIRs and detained student activists. Neha Bora, president of the All India Students Association, was released early on Saturday. Separately, protesters marched to the Delhi Police headquarters under the banner “Women will not be silenced” over sexual harassment allegations, a demonstration connected to the aftermath of the rally.

Before the march, Delhi Police had served Dipke a notice barring him from holding it. Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita prohibitory orders were in force in the area, and the New Delhi Municipal Council had shut Central Park for two days. Dipke had said he was ready to go to jail for waving the national flag.

Where this leaves the CJP

The movement has been facing mounting pressure. Two of its members, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were sent to judicial custody earlier this week after crossing barricades at Jantar Mantar, and the protest leaders have been under scrutiny from the BJP, which has alleged that the agitation aims at regime change, a claim the protesters reject.

Dipke’s release removes the group’s founder from custody but leaves him bound by conditions. Whether the peace bond limits his ability to lead further protests is likely to become a point of contention.

What to watch

Whether the written order sets out additional restrictions, whether the CJP challenges the preventive arrest, and what its next protest looks like are the key questions. The legal fight over the SIR exercise, which started the agitation, is also continuing in the Supreme Court.
