A quiet village morning in Greater Noida turned into a scene of grief on Saturday, when five members of one family, three of them children, were found dead at their home. Police say food poisoning is one of the suspected causes, but the deaths are still being investigated and nothing has been confirmed.
What happened
The bodies were found in the family’s house in Nagla Shri Padam village, in the Rabupura police station area. The dead have been identified as Mahesh, 37, his wife Lalita, 35, and their children Laddu, 11, Mishti, 7, and Sakshat, 3.
Police received information on Saturday morning. According to officers, the family members were found lying on their beds, as if they had gone to sleep. Local police, senior officers, an ambulance and a team from the Food Safety Department rushed to the house.
The dinner
Mahesh’s mother and neighbours told investigators that the family had eaten noodles for dinner on Friday night. Greater Noida Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrawan Kumar Singh said the family had eaten at around 10 pm. That detail has led police to suspect food poisoning, though they have not confirmed it.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Rajeev Kumar Sisodiya said the family “were resting after dinner” and appeared to have fallen asleep. Prima facie, police said, it looks like a case of food poisoning.
What police are checking
Officers have been careful. They say the cause of death can only be established after post-mortem examinations and scientific tests, and that no conclusion about food poisoning or any possible foul play has been reached.
A field unit and a forensic team have gone through the house and gathered evidence. Food safety officials have collected samples. Investigators are looking in particular at whether any toxic substance was present in the food the family ate, or whether the deaths were caused by something else.
What happens next
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. The results of that, along with forensic and laboratory reports on the food samples, are expected to decide what happened. Until then, the police say the investigation is open.
A note for readers
Doctors generally advise that anyone who develops sudden vomiting, diarrhoea, severe stomach pain or unusual drowsiness after a meal should get medical help quickly. If a household member falls ill after eating, keeping any leftover food and packaging can help doctors and investigators.
