Electronic Arts (EA) has laid off between 300 to 400 employees, including roughly 100 at its well-known Respawn Entertainment division, in a sweeping reorganisation aimed at aligning with its “long-term strategic priorities,” according to a Bloomberg report. Among the casualties is an unannounced game in the popular Titanfall universe, which has now been officially scrapped. The move reflects a broader reshuffling at the video game giant, which had 13,700 employees globally as of March 2024, with 66% based outside the United States. In a statement to Reuters, EA said the changes were intended to “more effectively align teams and allocate resources in service of driving future growth.”
Respawn, the EA-owned studio behind Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, confirmed the cuts and the cancellation of the Titanfall-related title in a post on X. “We’ve made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some targeted adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi,” the studio said. Despite the cancellations, Respawn assured fans that development continues on the next season of Apex Legends, while the next chapter in the Star Wars Jedi franchise is being positioned to “raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay.”
The layoffs follow EA’s announcement in January that it was lowering its annual bookings forecast, citing weak in-game spending for FC 25 and the underperformance of its latest Dragon Age title. The company blamed the shortfall on broader economic uncertainty, including inflationary pressures that have dampened consumer spending in the gaming sector.
