India finally opened its gold-medal account at the Asian Games 2026 on Tuesday, September 22, with the women’s cricket team producing a dominant performance against Sri Lanka in the final at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin. The emphatic victory not only handed India its first gold of the Aichi-Nagoya Games but also lifted the country’s overall medal tally to seven.

India now has one gold, four silver and two bronze medals, moving up to eighth position in the Asian Games 2026 medal tally. China continues to occupy the top spot, with hosts Japan in second and South Korea in third.

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India produced a commanding all-round display in the women’s T20 final. After winning the toss and opting to bat, India posted a massive 216/3, its highest-ever total in women’s cricket at the Asian Games.

Smriti Mandhana provided the foundation for the innings with a brilliant 79 off 45 deliveries. She combined with Shafali Verma, who made 48 from 29 balls, to put Sri Lanka under pressure from the opening overs.

The pair added 99 runs for the first wicket before Shafali departed. Mandhana continued the assault and brought up a rapid half-century before eventually falling for 79.

India’s late-innings acceleration was equally impressive. Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten on 49 from just 22 balls, smashing boundaries at a remarkable rate and ensuring India crossed the 200-run mark. India struck 13 boundaries in the innings and established a target that proved far beyond Sri Lanka’s reach.

Sri Lanka's chase quickly unravelled. India's bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, with Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma and Shree Charani taking two wickets each. Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for just 69, handing India a massive 147-run victory.

The result means India has now won the women's cricket gold medal at two successive Asian Games, having also triumphed in the previous edition.

The cricket triumph also resulted in a significant jump in the standings. India moved into eighth position, while China remained firmly at the top of the table.

The rankings, however, remain fluid because the Asian Games will continue until October 4, with medals still to be decided across dozens of sporting disciplines.

Shooting provides the foundation for India’s medal haul

While the cricket team delivered India's first gold, shooting has been the backbone of the country's medal campaign so far.

Five of India's first six medals came from shooting, underlining the discipline's importance to the Indian contingent.

Elavenil Valarivan opened India's medal campaign by winning silver in the women's 10m air rifle individual event. She had earlier combined with Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod to secure another silver in the team competition.

In the men's 10m air rifle events, Himanshu Dhillon added a silver medal, while Rudrankksh Patil won bronze. Dhillon, Patil and 18-year-old Parth Mane also secured silver in the team event.

That gave India five shooting medals before the women's cricket team added gold and Suchika Tariyal contributed a bronze in traditional mixed martial arts.

Suchika's medal also carried historical significance. Her bronze made her India's first Asian Games medallist in mixed martial arts.

Wushu and badminton offer India more medal opportunities

India's campaign received another boost on September 22 when wushu star Roshibina Devi progressed to the women's 60kg semi-finals.

Roshibina defeated Chu Man Sin of Macao, China, 5-0 in the quarter-final. Her progression guarantees another medal for India and extends her remarkable record at the Asian Games.

Roshibina had previously won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games and silver in 2022. A medal in Aichi-Nagoya would therefore give her three successive Asian Games medals.

Badminton also delivered a major development for the Indian contingent. The men's team defeated Japan 3-0 in the quarter-finals, with Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty and the doubles pairing of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty helping India secure a place in the semi-finals.

The result assures India of at least a medal in the men's team badminton event.

The women's badminton team, meanwhile, had a contrasting outcome. India lost 1-3 to Japan in the quarter-finals, with PV Sindhu securing India's only win in the tie.

The men's hockey team continued its strong start with another convincing victory, defeating Sri Lanka 16-1 in a Pool A encounter. India's women's hockey team had also begun its campaign impressively with a 19-0 victory over Uzbekistan.

In shooting, Elavenil Valarivan and Parth Rakesh Mane narrowly missed the podium in the mixed team 10m air rifle event, finishing fourth after qualifying second for the final.

India's table tennis teams have also been involved in the early stages of competition, while its boxers have maintained an unbeaten run so far. Gymnast Pranati Nayak qualified for the vault final, keeping another potential medal opportunity alive.

China maintains early lead in Asian Games 2026 medal tally

While India's first gold has provided momentum, China continues to set the pace in the overall medal standings.

The Chinese contingent has accumulated a substantial number of gold medals in the opening days, keeping it comfortably ahead of Japan and South Korea. Japan, competing on home soil, has also made a strong start, while South Korea remains among the leading medal-winning nations.

India's position is likely to change repeatedly as more events reach their medal stages. With several strong contenders still competing, the country's seven-medal haul at this stage represents only an early snapshot of its overall campaign.

India entered the Aichi-Nagoya Games looking to build on its historic performance at the previous Asian Games, where it won a record 106 medals, including 28 golds.

The immediate target in Japan is now to convert the momentum generated by the women's cricket team's gold into further podium finishes.

With another medal assured in wushu and the men's badminton team already through to the semi-finals, India has additional opportunities arriving quickly. Hockey, boxing, shooting, badminton, athletics and other disciplines will also play important roles as the competition progresses.

For now, the women's cricket team has provided the defining moment of India's opening campaign.

After two days of waiting for a gold medal, the defending champions delivered one of the most comprehensive victories of the Games. The 147-run win over Sri Lanka not only put India on the top step of the podium but also gave the country's Asian Games campaign a fresh burst of momentum.

With the Games continuing until October 4, India's one gold, four silver and two bronze medals are only the beginning of what promises to be a closely watched medal race in Aichi-Nagoya.
