Vikramshila Setu Collapses In Bihar Section Falls Into Ganga River

A portion of the Vikramshila Setu over the Ganga River collapsed in Bihar's Bhagalpur district earlier today triggering panic and forcing authorities to halt all traffic movements.

Officials confirmed that no casualties have been reported.

According to district authorities the collapse occurred around 1:00 AM near pillar number 133.

A gap formed between two slabs followed by a section falling into the river.

Swift action by officials ensured vehicles and commuters were cleared from the area in time preventing any injuries.

The 4.7 kilometre long bridge is a crucial link between Bhagalpur and Naugachia.

It has been closed from both ends.

Commuters have been advised to use alternate routes via Munger. Temporary arrangements including boats and steamers have been deployed.

An investigation has been ordered with an expert engineering committee set up to find the exact cause.

Repair work is expected to take three months. In the long term a parallel four lane bridge is already under construction and scheduled for completion later this year.

The incident comes after a viral video in March had highlighted deterioration in parts of the structure prompting inspections and a proposed maintenance plan still awaiting approval.
