The Congress party on Thursday ended nearly 10 days of suspense by naming V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, marking a major political shift in the southern state after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power with a sweeping electoral mandate.

Satheesan’s elevation comes after the UDF registered a massive victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 140 seats and ending a decade-long rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by Pinarayi Vijayan. The emphatic result revived the Congress in one of India’s most politically significant states and positioned Satheesan as the face of the party’s resurgence.

The announcement was formally made after a series of consultations in New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram. The Congress leadership eventually settled on Satheesan after weighing the claims of other top contenders, particularly K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala.

Why VD Satheesan Was Chosen

The decision to appoint Satheesan was seen as both political and strategic. Over the last few years, the six-time MLA emerged as one of the Congress party’s most aggressive and visible leaders in Kerala politics. As Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, he consistently attacked the LDF government on issues ranging from corruption allegations to governance failures, helping rebuild the Congress’s public image after its disappointing performance in earlier elections.

Party insiders indicated that Rahul Gandhi strongly backed Satheesan’s candidature, viewing him as a leader capable of energising younger voters while maintaining organisational discipline within the Congress. Reports also suggested that the Congress high command believed Satheesan’s grassroots connect and public appeal gave him an edge over Venugopal, who is considered highly influential within the party’s national structure but less rooted in Kerala’s day-to-day politics.

The suspense over the chief ministerial choice had intensified over the past week as supporters of different factions openly campaigned for their preferred candidates. Posters, lobbying efforts, and public statements from allies and community organisations added to the drama. Even the delay in announcing the CM’s name became a major talking point across Kerala’s political landscape.

The Congress leadership, however, eventually rallied behind Satheesan in what many analysts described as an attempt to project generational change and stronger governance credentials.

From Student Politics to Kerala’s Top Job

Born on May 31, 1964, in Nettoor in Ernakulam district, Vadassery Damodaran Satheesan began his political career through student activism. A trained lawyer by profession, he gradually rose through the ranks of the Congress party and built a reputation as a sharp debater and organisational leader.

Satheesan first contested from the Paravur Assembly constituency in 1996 but lost in what was then considered a Communist stronghold. He returned stronger and went on to become a dominant political figure in the region, winning multiple consecutive terms as MLA. His rise within the Congress accelerated after he was appointed Leader of Opposition in 2021 following the party’s electoral setback that year.

Over the last five years, Satheesan successfully repositioned himself as the principal anti-LDF voice in Kerala. His critics often described him as confrontational, while supporters viewed him as fearless and uncompromising against corruption and administrative failures.

The Internal Congress Battle

The contest for the chief minister’s post exposed the factional dynamics within the Kerala Congress. While Satheesan enjoyed strong backing among younger MLAs and sections of the state leadership, Venugopal’s supporters highlighted his proximity to the Gandhi family and his role as Congress general secretary (organisation). Chennithala, meanwhile, was seen as the experienced veteran with longstanding organisational influence.

The final decision reportedly came after multiple rounds of deliberations involving Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. According to reports, Venugopal eventually agreed to support the party’s decision in the interest of unity. After the announcement, he publicly congratulated Satheesan and pledged complete cooperation to the incoming government.

Satheesan too struck a conciliatory tone in his first public remarks as CM-designate. He thanked the Congress leadership and acknowledged the support of Venugopal and Chennithala, saying he did not view the position as a personal achievement but as a collective responsibility.

Celebrations Across Kerala

Soon after the Congress announcement, celebrations erupted at Satheesan’s residence and Congress offices across Kerala. Party workers distributed sweets, burst crackers, and waved party flags as television channels carried live visuals of jubilant supporters.

The atmosphere reflected the larger political significance of the Congress comeback in Kerala. After spending ten years in opposition, the UDF now faces the challenge of translating its electoral promises into governance outcomes.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place after Satheesan formally stakes claim to form the government. The Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting at the KPCC headquarters formally endorsed his leadership before the announcement was made public.

Challenges Ahead for the New CM

While Satheesan’s appointment has energised Congress workers, political observers say the new chief minister faces immediate challenges. Kerala’s economy, unemployment concerns, welfare spending, and infrastructure development are likely to dominate the government’s early agenda. Maintaining coalition unity within the UDF will also be crucial, especially after the intense competition for the top post.

The Congress leadership will additionally expect Satheesan to ensure stability within the party and prevent factionalism from resurfacing. The delay in selecting the chief minister already exposed fault lines within the organisation, and managing competing ambitions could become one of his toughest political tests.

Another key challenge will be delivering on the expectations created by the UDF’s landslide victory. With 102 seats in the Assembly, the alliance has received one of the strongest mandates in recent Kerala political history. Analysts say voters will now closely watch whether the Congress can offer a governance model different from the LDF regime it campaigned against.

A Defining Moment for Congress

Satheesan’s rise is also being viewed as an important moment for the Congress nationally. Kerala remains one of the few major states where the party continues to retain strong organisational relevance. The victory and leadership transition are expected to strengthen Rahul Gandhi’s influence within the party and reinforce the leadership’s emphasis on generational change.

For Kerala, the appointment signals the beginning of a new political chapter after a decade of Left rule. For Congress, it is an opportunity to demonstrate governance credibility ahead of future national electoral battles.

As Satheesan prepares to take oath as chief minister, the focus now shifts from political suspense to administrative delivery. The man who spent years attacking the government from the opposition benches must now lead Kerala through economic, political, and social challenges while fulfilling the massive expectations attached to the Congress comeback.
