Punjab Pull Off Historic IPL Run Chase; Scare as Ngidi Suffers On-Field Injury

Punjab Kings scripted history in the Indian Premier League by successfully chasing down a massive 265-run target, registering the biggest run chase in IPL history. Punjab achieved this remarkable feat against Delhi Capitals.

Punjab Kings defeated Delhi Capitals by six wickets, completing the chase in just 19 overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Delhi, batting first, had posted a mammoth total of 264 runs — their highest-ever IPL score — but it ultimately proved insufficient.

Biggest Run Chase in IPL History

Punjab Kings broke their own record for the highest successful run chase in IPL history. Previously, they had chased down 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2024 season. Now, by surpassing the 265-run target set by Delhi Capitals, Punjab have set a new benchmark.

Punjab also registered their highest-ever IPL total. Their previous best was 262 against Kolkata, but under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, the team has now raised the bar to 265 runs.

For Delhi Capitals, KL Rahul played a sensational unbeaten knock of 152 runs, creating history. Rahul became the Indian player with the highest individual score in IPL history.

Rahul and Rana Dominate

Delhi’s innings began cautiously, but KL Rahul and Nitish Rana soon shifted gears and completely turned the momentum. The duo stitched together a massive 220-run partnership for the second wicket in just 95 balls — a truly historic stand.

Rana smashed 91 runs off 44 balls, while Rahul hammered 152 runs off 67 deliveries, remaining unbeaten and dismantling the bowling attack.

Punjab’s Explosive Start and Iyer’s Finish

Punjab’s chase was built on a blistering start by Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya. The duo added 116 runs in the first six overs, marking the second-highest powerplay score in IPL history.

Prabhsimran scored a fiery 76 off 26 balls, while Priyansh Arya contributed 43 runs off just 17 deliveries. However, Punjab briefly stumbled in the middle overs, losing three wickets within 19 runs.

Captain Shreyas Iyer held firm at one end and played a match-winning knock of 71 runs off 36 balls, guiding Punjab to a historic victory.

Major Injury Scare During the Match

Amid the high-scoring thriller, a worrying moment unfolded when Lungi Ngidi suffered a nasty fall while fielding and sustained a head injury. Given the seriousness of the situation, he was immediately taken to the hospital.

Following the incident, Vipraj Nigam came onto the field as a concussion substitute.

This match will be remembered not only for Punjab Kings’ record-breaking chase but also for the intense drama and moments of concern that unfolded during the game.
