Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk is on a three-day visit to India. The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, space and nuclear energy.
New Delhi: India will continue to support every meaningful effort to bring peace to Ukraine and West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday after wide-ranging talks with his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, who is on a three-day visit to India.
“Be it Ukraine or West Asia, India will continue to support every meaningful effort towards peace,” Modi said in his media statement after the talks.
Defence, space and nuclear energy
Modi said the two sides had taken several decisions to expand the strategic partnership and were determined to step up their overall engagement. “We have reached an understanding to deepen relations in defence, space, and nuclear energy,” he said, and invited Polish companies to engage in co-development and co-production with India in these strategic sectors.
Shared values and global governance
Modi said India and Poland both believe in democratic values and the rule of law. He said reform is essential to make global governance institutions more empowered and effective.
Trade and the EU
The leaders underlined the importance of the India-EU free trade agreement, which Modi said would further consolidate economic engagement between the two countries and open new opportunities for businesses and industries.
A shared history
Modi said the friendship rests on more than diplomatic ties. He recalled that during World War II the royal families of Jamnagar and Kolhapur sheltered thousands of Polish children and families in India. He also thanked Poland for supporting the safe return of Indian students from Ukraine in 2022, calling it an extension of that spirit of humanity.
Context
The visit comes amid a renewed global push to end the conflict in Ukraine. India has repeatedly called for an early and peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war, with respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. On West Asia, it has urged all sides to avoid escalation, protect civilians, and return to dialogue.
